In the last 20 years aquaculture education has moved from courses in vocational agriculture schools to having solidified itself as an integral part of environmental, biological and research-related courses in classrooms across the USA. And that is no wonder, aquaculture now accounts for nearly 50 percent of the world's food fish. The industry's rise creates many new educational and professional opportunities for students. Aquaculture proves to be an effective tool for teachers seeking to incorporate hands-on science learning in their classrooms. Moreover, students are highly motivated to learn in an environment that includes aquaculture.

The European Commission challenges schools to Find the Blue and take the first steps to become agents for change and sustainability of the ocean and seas. This workshop will focus on bringing the topic of Aquaculture to schools.

These 2 online workshops present the value of aquaculture in the education of youngsters, and how technology has increased the quality of such an educational experience for students involved in science projects. You will have the opportunity to talk to teachers in the US that have set up their aquaculture facilities in schools and discover a variety of possible projects ranging from farming algae, aquaponics to different species of fish.

Our host and mentor is J. Adam Frederick, Assistant Director for Education at Maryland Sea Grant College, a world expert in aquaculture education.

The workshop targets science and STEM teachers in secondary education but is open to all who are interested.

After the workshop, you will:

§ Know what aquaculture education is all about.

§ Receive information on aquaculture education for you to consider in your lessons.

§ Have inspiration to set up your own aquaculture project.
